VAWZ, in conjunction with a number of concerned stakeholders, assisted with the project “Feed Mana” – a drought-mitigation programme aimed at alleviating the effects of a very poor rainy season on the animals at Mana Pools. Our aim was to alleviate wildlife suffering and starvation by supplying supplementary feed to the area.
A recent fire in the surrounding escarpment had exacerbated the situation, with more animals moving to the ecologically-fragile flood plains as a result.
A number of truck-loads of hay were delivered and distributed in the area. To ensure this continued until the rains commenced, we put out an urgent appeal for donations of hay bales (preferably Katambora Rhodes grass), soybean hay, suitable meal or cubes, molasses, diesel, and transport. This initiative was overwhelmingly supported both at home and abroad, making a real impact on the lives and survival of our wildlife. 16,300 bales of hay, 13,400 litres of diesel, 3,500 kgs of game cubes, 900 game blocks, and 50 salt blocks were donated, and 37 truckloads were delivered in 10 weeks!
