VAWZ is responsible for investigating cases of suspected animal cruelty or abuse, as well as any situations where animal welfare may be compromised.

Investigations and Inspections

VAWZ Animal Welfare Inspectors are appointed by Government and mandated under The Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act, Chapter 10:09, which falls under the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Tourism and Hospitality Industry. We have been in operation since April 2010 and are involved in dealing with animal welfare issues throughout Zimbabwe, covering domestic (companion) animals, livestock and wildlife.

VAWZ is responsible for investigating cases of suspected animal cruelty/abuse that come to the attention of the public as well as any situations where animal welfare may be compromised. We work with legal authorities to facilitate prosecution where necessary. VAWZ also works closely with the Department of Veterinary Services, private Veterinary Surgeries, the Zimbabwe Republic Police, Parks and Wildlife Management Authority and other like-minded organisations.

Our operations include investigating cases of suspected cruelty and abuse as reported by members of the public, the capture, sterilisation and vaccination of stray dogs and cats, livestock transportation, abattoir and chicken slaughter house inspections, pet shop inspections, companies that use captive wild animals for recreation and commercial purposes (wildlife parks, crocodile farms etc), security guard dog inspections, and attending to road traffic accidents involving animals, to name but a few.

Humans education is an essential part of raising animal welfare awareness and schools, communities and individuals are addressed wherever and whenever the opportunity arises. Training workshops are held to improve animal welfare knowledge, for example: Animal Welfare and the Law, Security Dog Companies, Donkey Health and Welfare.

Regular meetings are held with all stakeholders, such as the Department of Veterinary Services, Zimbabwe Republic Police, Parks and Wildlife Management Authority and other local government organizations and NGO's.

VAWZ has a number of special projects in operation among them Livestock Transportation, Donkey Welfare, Capture, Neuter, Vaccinate, Release of stray/straying dogs and cats, Humane Education in schools, Wildlife Conservation and Protection and the importation of domestic and exotic pets. We also carry out regular and routine inspections of abattoirs and poultry slaughter houses, security company guard dogs, service animals, pet shops, research laboratories and companies that use captive wild animals for recreation and commercial purposes (wildlife parks, crocodile farms, etc).
