Veterinarians for Animal Welfare Zimbabwe (VAWZ) is a private voluntary organisation dedicated to animal welfare in Zimbabwe, formed in 2010 at the request of the Department of Livestock and Veterinary Services after it was identified that there was a need for veterinarians to become more involved in animal welfare issues countrywide.

Acting under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (Chapter 19:09), VAWZ address animal welfare issues, dealing with domestic animals, livestock and wildlife. VAWZ provide veterinary services, run rural sterilisation/vaccination programs, and manage two animal clinics. Their work relies entirely on support and donations from members of the public, from corporate sponsorship, and on functions held by their fund raising committee. Read more

The work we do: The scope of animal welfare work that VAWZ undertakes can be broadly defined under the following three main areas of operation:

Rural Animal Welfare Clinics: These campaigns are run throughout the country during the winter months. Areas covered at present are Honde Valley, Chimanimani, Nyanga, Victoria Falls, Beit Bridge, Caledonia, Christon Bank, Old Mazowe and Marondera .. Read more

Beitbridge Donkey Health & Welfare Centre: Donkeys are used by communities in the area for transport and draught power; however, many of these donkeys have low welfare conditions due in part to poor nutrition, management and handling practices .. Read more

Inspections and Investigations: VAWZ is responsible for investigating cases of suspected animal cruelty/abuse that come to the attention of the public as well as any situations where animal welfare may be compromised .. Read more

A special mention of thanks to the many veterinary surgeries who give so generously of their time and expertise to attend to the many animals we bring in to them for treatment.
